Nnamdi Kanu: IPOB Threatens To Boycott 2027 Elections

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) movement has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Nigerian federal government, demanding that the appeal of its imprisoned leader, Nnamdi Kanu, be scheduled for a hearing, or face a possible boycott of the 2027 general elections across the South-East and other areas it calls “Biafraland.”

Chris Nwaogu, IPOB’s Head of Directorate of State, issued this warning in a video, while spokesperson Emma Powerful backed the statement in a press release. Both accused the government of failing to file a response brief or schedule the appeal hearing, despite having swiftly secured Kanu's conviction.

Kanu is serving a life sentence in Sokoto after being pronounced “guilty” of terrorism by the Federal High Court in Abuja in November 2025. His appeal seeking to overturn the conviction was filed earlier in 2026, and his family had recently expressed concerns regarding procedural delays.

“A country that rushed to convict is now too frightened to defend the conviction. We are giving them 14 days… A government that cannot face its Court of Appeal has no right to demand our votes,” said Mr Nwaogu.
