Akirika Obu: Akwa Ibom Ignore Court Order, Occupy Abia Territory

Residents of the Akirika Obu Ndoki community in Abia State are denouncing repeated incursions by armed individuals from neighboring Akwa Ibom State, as well as that state government's refusal to vacate a school belonging to the Abia community, a move that violates a High Court ruling.

In July 2026, the High Court ruled that Akirika Obu-Ndoki falls under the Ukwa East Local Government Area (LGA) in Abia State, citing the 1985 Boundary Adjustment Act. The court issued a permanent injunction prohibiting the Akwa Ibom State government and the Ika Local Government Area from illegally entering the territory in question.

The Igbo town resident told Creek Metro that an armed group from the Ika Local Government Area (Akwa Ibom State) has been laying siege to the school and the junction which rightfully belong to Akirika Obu.

“People from Akwa Ibom keep coming to our village to cause trouble; they are still occupying our school, located at the spot we call 'Mission',” Uchenna explained to Creek Metro on Friday.  Another resident, Nnenna Nwankwo, indicated that the community which is still recovering from an invasion in 2000 that resulted in loss of life and destruction of property continues to face threats despite the judgment handed down in July 2026.

“We want peace, which is why we took the matter to court; the courts have confirmed that Akirika-Obu Ndoki is a community in Abia State,” Mr. Kingsley Nna told Creek Metro by phone, urging the federal and state governments to ensure that the invaders vacate the parts of Akirika Obu they occupy and continue to lay claim to.
